Councilmember Sheikh believes that leadership should never be distant or detached. His signature philosophy—“Go to the SPOT”—is rooted in hands-on engagement and showing up where problems actually occur. Whether addressing street repairs, public safety, or neighborhood concerns, he knows that real solutions start with real presence. This proactive mindset has helped build community trust and accelerate issue resolution across District 3.

  • Monthly Ride-Alongs & Hot Spot Visits

    • As the first Torrance Councilmember to conduct monthly ride-alongs with city staff, Councilmember Sheikh personally visits “Hot Spots”—areas that need improvement, attention, or a fast response. From fixing broken infrastructure to addressing quality-of-life complaints, these site visits allow him to listen directly to residents, understand their experiences, and collaborate with staff to get things done quickly and effectively.

  • Torrance Beautification Project

    • Through the Torrance Beautification Project, Councilmember Sheikh has led efforts to remove encampments, clean and upgrade parks, plant over 300 new trees, install a welcome sign off the 405 FWY, and replace aging infrastructure like light poles. These improvements are more than cosmetic—they reflect a deep investment in community pride, safety, and quality of life. Each project is a testament to what’s possible when residents and local government work together with purpose.

  • Accountable, Visible, and Responsive Governance

    • Councilmember Sheikh’s hands-on approach reflects a larger commitment to transparent and accountable leadership. By going into the field, he ensures that city resources are aligned with residents’ real-world needs. This philosophy of leadership—grounded in visibility, action, and follow-through—helps drive smarter policy decisions and ensures no community issue goes unnoticed.

Strengthen Public Safety

  • Torrance: A Safe, Senior-Friendly City

    • Torrance has been recognized by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of California’s most retiree-friendly cities, with 21.6% of residents aged 65 and older. The city also consistently ranks among the safest in the nation—achievements that reflect strong collaboration among current and former city leaders. Councilmember Sheikh is committed to preserving this reputation through thoughtful, forward-thinking policy.

  • Investing in Safety & Innovation

    • To keep Torrance’s neighborhoods, schools, and streets safe, Councilmember Sheikh continues to champion investments in advanced safety technologies. He works closely with law enforcement and public agencies to ensure effective, community-centered safety measures that protect all residents—especially youth and seniors.

  • Tackling Homelessness with Real Results

    • Since taking office in June 2022, Councilmember Sheikh has made homelessness a top priority. By partnering with state and federal leaders, he has helped secure critical funding for local initiatives. Thanks to efforts like the 3290 Temporary Housing Village, over 90 individuals have transitioned to permanent housing—42 through the village and 48 through street outreach. Sheikh remains focused on regional partnerships to deliver lasting solutions.

Support Public Education

  • Championing Student Success

    • Councilmember Sheikh works closely with Torrance Unified School District (TUSD) staff and the Board of Education to ensure students' needs are met and supported. As a Board Member of the Torrance Education Foundation, he actively contributes to fundraising efforts that benefit more than 23,000 students across the district.

  • Personal Commitment to Students

    • In 2025, Councilmember Sheikh personally funded scholarships for three high school students in recognition of their academic excellence. He was also nominated as a student mentor and appointed Chair of the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee, where he helped ensure transparency in the use of funds for voter-approved school improvements. In 2025, he was reappointed by the TUSD Board in recognition of his continued service.

  • Investing in Torrance’s Future

    • Councilmember Sheikh believes that a strong public education system is essential to a thriving community. His ongoing support for local schools reflects his commitment to building a brighter future for all Torrance families.

Promote Senior Citizen Programs

  • Investing in Senior Facilities

    • Working closely with City staff, Councilmember Sheikh is helping secure funding to strengthen programs at city-operated senior centers. His efforts focus on improving accessibility, expanding services, and ensuring long-term sustainability for senior-focused facilities.

  • Improving Meal Services at Bartlett Center

    • With Council support, additional resources were recently approved to upgrade food delivery services at the Senior Bartlett Center—boosting both efficiency and quality. More updates are on the way as these improvements continue to roll out.

Improve Traffic Management

  • Prioritizing Safer, Smoother Streets

    • Councilmember Sheikh continues to make traffic congestion and roadway safety a top priority. He is actively collaborating with state agencies to address key problem areas along major corridors in Torrance that fall under state oversight.

  • Collaborative, Data-Driven Solutions

    • To create lasting improvements, Councilmember Sheikh works hand-in-hand with traffic engineers, the Torrance Police Department, and local residents. His approach emphasizes practical, evidence-based strategies that target high-impact areas.

  • Focusing on School Zones & High-Traffic Areas​

    • ​Special attention is being given to traffic near schools and heavily traveled streets, where safety is most critical. Councilmember Sheikh is committed to delivering smart, community-informed solutions that make daily commutes safer and more efficient for all.

Improve Infrastructure

  • Beautifying and Modernizing Public Spaces

    • Councilmember Sheikh is leading efforts to enhance public signage around parks, hospitals, and the Civic Center—making these key community spaces more visible, accessible, and welcoming for everyone who lives in or visits Torrance.

  • Prioritizing Road Repairs and Public Safety

    • Addressing deteriorating road conditions is a central focus of Councilmember Sheikh’s infrastructure plan. He is actively working to restore and repave aging streets, fix potholes, and improve surface conditions to boost safety and overall quality of life.

  • Delivering Results Through Strategic Investment

    • Under Councilmember Sheikh’s leadership, the City has made major infrastructure upgrades, including:

      • ​Repairs to the underground storage tank at the City Yard

      • Renovation of fire station living quarters

      • Roof replacement at Nakano Theater

      • Enhancements at the Veteran’s Memorial

      • Refurbishment of Columbia Park’s bocce court

  • Bringing Innovation to Torrance

    • Councilmember Sheikh has helped attract major high-tech companies to Torrance, including:
      • AFEELA – a cutting-edge EV collaboration by Sony and Honda
      • Antares – advanced aerospace manufacturing at the Torrance Industrial Exchange
      • Castelion – a next-gen defense company now occupying the former Canoo facility
      • Navitas – a global leader in next-generation semiconductor technology, opened in 2023


      These additions are boosting Torrance’s profile as a hub for innovation, clean energy, and advanced technology.
       

  • Revitalizing Retail & Dining

    • The Del Amo Fashion Center continues to thrive with a wave of new retailers and restaurants, including Philz Coffee, Urban Necessities, Lola’s Doughnuts, D1 Training, and the highly anticipated return of Apple in Fall 2024. New businesses like Rookie Kids, The Escape Game, and Gorjana reflect the district’s growing vibrancy and family-friendly appeal.

  • Supporting Local Growth & Development

    • Councilmember Sheikh supports projects that bring jobs and energy to the community—like the CalBay development at 190th and Western, which will feature Torrance’s first drive-thru Shake Shack. He continues working to attract a balanced mix of businesses that contribute to economic vitality while reflecting the values and needs of Torrance residents.

About five years ago, Asam Sheikh took his community involvement to the dance floor!

To raise funds and awareness for the Torrance Education Foundation—where he served as a Board Member—Asam participated in the Dancing with the South Bay Stars competition.

 
He’s continued that commitment ever since, helping support over 23,000 students in the Torrance Unified School District through ongoing fundraising and advocacy.

Asam is running for re-election to the Torrance City Council because he wants to bring his enthusiasm and passion for serving the community—along with his business skills and financial expertise—to the city.

He is ready to serve this Community with his extensive financial background and professional experience of making tough and bold decisions.
 
He loves this City as he has been blessed to work in it, live in it, and serve in it. He says, “The City of Torrance made it possible for me to live my American Dream. District 3 is the heart and backbone of Torrance as it's in the center and around many significant amenities (Del Amo Mall, Madrona March, City Hall, etc.) which pumps money for the entirety of Torrance's economic development.”

If elected to the Torrance City Council, he will always listen to and interact with residents. He believes in open, transparent communication and will not be silent. He will help the City go forward by tackling any obstacles and resolving any problems that may arise in the future. He is the ideal candidate for Torrance City Council District 3, as he will serve as a voice for the Torrance residents.
